Esusu

Also: Asusu, Isusu

A traditional West African rotating savings system. Members of a trusted group each contribute a fixed amount periodically; the pool is given to one member per cycle, rotating until all have received their share.

Ajo

The Yoruba name for a rotating savings group in south-west Nigeria. Functionally identical to Esusu – members contribute and take turns receiving the pooled amount.

The Hausa name for a community rotating savings group, widely practised in northern Nigeria, Niger, and Hausa-speaking communities. Members agree on contributions and a payout rotation order.

Thrift Savings / Thrift Contribution

An informal term used in Nigeria to describe cooperative savings groups where members pool contributions and rotate payouts. "Thrift" is widely used interchangeably with Ajo, Esusu, and Adashe.

Rotating Savings and Credit Association

The academic and international term for community savings groups where members contribute regularly and payouts rotate among members. Esusu, Ajo, Adashe, Tontine, and Paluwagan are all forms of ROSCA.

Tontine

The French-language equivalent of Esusu/Ajo, widely used in West and Central African francophone countries (Senegal, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, etc.). A group savings rotation with similar structure.

The Indian equivalent of Esusu — a rotating savings scheme regulated under the Chit Funds Act in India. Members bid or rotate for the pot each cycle.
